Best Profanity Filter App for Movies

Watching movies and shows with your family is a great way to spend time together. Randomly sprinkled profanity throughout the movie can quickly ruin movie night. You don’t want to sit with a remote and manually mute swear words the entire night, but you also don’t want to do a lot of video editing of a movie beforehand just to watch it with the family.

The Clean Media Player app automatically finds and filters profanity. It mutes the foul language and displays the cleaned up subtitles on the screen. The profanity filters are customizable. You can add and remove the words that should be filtered out and even choose what words to display in the subtitles instead. There is also a feature that allows you to skip scenes.

Here is a demo of the Clean Media Player in action:

Benefits of the Clean Media Player:

  • The profanity filtering, audio muting, and scene skipping is done in real time while watching the movie. No movie editing necessary.
  • Finding and downloading subtitles is quick and easy.
  • Plays video files, DVDs, Blu-rays, and content from your personal media servers.
  • Comes with predefined profanity filters that can be easily customized.
  • No hardware to purchase. Just install the application on your Windows PC or laptop and plug it into your TV using an HDMI cable.
  • No monthly subscription. After trying the fully featured application free for 7 days, you can purchase an activation key for only $14.99.

Customize Filters

To enable or disable the profanity filter click Subtitles ➤ Enable Filter menu. By default this is enabled.

To customize the profanity filters click ToolsSettings menu and select the Filter tab. Here you can enter the Default Replacement Text that you want to display in the subtitles in place of a blank. You can also see what predefined curse words are going to be filtered by clicking on the Show Filtered Words button.

In the grid that shows up, you can checkmark the words you want to filter out. By default all curse words are checked. You can enter text in the Replacement column for each word to customize what you want to see in place of that word when the subtitles are displayed. You can also scroll to the bottom and add new words. If the Replacement column does not have any text for a word entered then the Default Replacement Text value will be used.

Click the Save button when you are done customizing.

Select Movie

To select what movie you want to play click the dropdown in the top left corner and select your Video Type. The available options are File, DVD, Blu-ray, and Local Network.

Clean Media Player Video Type

To play a video file select File in the dropdown and choose which file you want to play by clicking the Select Media File  button on the right hand side of the dropdown.

The supported video file formats are:

MPEG-1/2, DivX® (1/2/3/4/5/6), MPEG-4 ASP, MKV, XviD, 3ivX D4, H.261, H.263 / H.263i, H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC, Cinepak, Theora, Dirac / VC-2, MJPEG (A/B), WMV 1/2, WMV 3 / WMV-9 / VC-1, Sorenson 1/3, DV, On2 VP3/VP5/VP6, Indeo Video v3 (IV32), Real Video (1/2/3/4).

To play a DVD or a Blu-ray select that option in the Video Type dropdown and then select which disc drive to use in the dropdown to the right.

Clean Media Player Disc Drive

If you plug in a USB disc drive after starting the application, it may not show up in the dropdown, to make it rediscover the available disc drives click the Refresh Drives button on the right.

Download Subtitles

The subtitles are required for the profanity filter to work. You can find and download subtitles by using Auto Find Subtitles or Manually Find Subtitles buttons on the top right hand side of the main screen.

The Auto Find Subtitles button is only available for video files. The way it works is it searches https://www.opensubtitles.com to find matching subtitles with the highest rating. If a match is found then it automatically downloads the .srt subtitles file for your movie and adds it to the Subtitles File dropdown.

If the Auto Find Subtitles is not able to find a match then you can use the Manually Find Subtitles button to find and download the subtitles yourself. When you click the Manually Find Subtitles button the Download Subtitles screen will open with the name of your file being entered in the Title search box. Here you can adjust the name and click the Search button.

Clean Media Player Download Subtitles

The results show the available subtitles in the grid in descending order by ratings. Here you can choose the subtitles file you would like to use and click the corresponding Download button on the left which will download the .srt subtitles file and add it to the Subtitles File dropdown.

While not required, creating your own account on https://www.opensubtitles.com is recommended. This way you can avoid the anonymous limit of 10 subtitles downloads within 24 hours per IP address. After creating an Open Subtitles account, click on the Clean Media Player Tools ➤ Settings menu and on the Subtitles tab enter your account information and click Save.

Adjust Subtitles Offset

We suggest making sure that the subtitles are in sync with the video when the movie stars. This way the audio will not mute too early or too late when the player tries to filter the profanity. To do this you can enable the subtitles to always be visible by selecting the Subtitles ➤ Visible ➤ Always menu and adjusting the Subtitles Offset slider until the correct subtitles show up on the screen when people start to speak. When you are done adjusting the subtitles offset then you can switch the subtitles back to only show up when the words are being censored by selecting the Subtitles ➤ Visible ➤ When Censored menu.

Another way to make sure that the subtitles are in sync is by looking at the bottom status bar of the Clean Media Player. When the video is playing, even when the subtitles are not visible on the video, the filtered subtitles are displayed in the toolbar so you can adjust the offset without having to switch subtitles visibility.

Subtitles in status bar

To adjust how early the audio should be muted before the the filtered subtitles are displayed or how long to keep the audio muted after the subtitles disappear click Tools ➤ Settings and select the Filter tab.

Subtitles mute offset before and after

The Mute Offset Before and Unmute Offset After can be adjusted here in milliseconds. Click Save to apply your changes.

Setup Skip Scenes

Sometimes muting the audio when there is cursing is not enough because there is an uncomfortable scene that you want skipped. The Clean Media Player gives you the ability to choose the video timespans that you want to not show using Skip Scenes. To enable this feature check the Playback ➤ Enable Skip Scenes menu.

To add a scene you want skipped:

  1. Click the Edit Skip Scenes button to bring up the Skip Scenes screen.
  2. On the main player screen, go to the exact second of the movie where you want the skipped scene to start and then click the Selected Video Time button for the Start Time on the Skip Scenes screen.
  3. Then go to the exact second of the movie where you want the skipped scene to end and then click the Selected Video Time button for the End Time on the Skip Scenes screen.
  4. By default, the Scene Type is set to Other but if you want to be more specific you can select the Scene Type that you are defining in the dropdown.
  5. Click Add Scene.
  6. After you are done adding all the scenes you would like to skip click the Save button. This will add the .skp file to the Skip Scenes File dropdown.
Skip Scenes

To choose which scene types you want to skip click Tools ➤ Settings menu and select the Skip Scenes tab.

Skip Scene Settings

Check the checkboxes to enable the Skip Scenes types you want to skip and then click the Save button.
